Fink on a Roll Collecting a Cool Grand at Afton
After several attempts to get shows in at The New Afton Speedway, the fans were treated to the second visit in as many weeks for the A-Verdi Storage Containers / CNYMS 1200cc Mini Sprints on Tuesday August 15th. Jared Fink was happy with the last visit with a 3rd place run but topped all competitors in attendance this night to pick up a cool $1000 for his efforts. The young Afton fans got involved on the evening with 12 lucky fans receiving CNYMS “Winged Thing” Tee shirts and meeting the top twelve drivers for the re-draw on the front stretch in front of the fans. The kids got to pull the numbers for the start of the A Main for their driver.
It was no give me by any means this night with a full field of 24 sprints in the pits and the heavy hitters were out for the bucks as ESS star Jeff VanDusen was piloting the Latour 36 and PSG reigning champ Flyin Bryan Howland was aboard the Mike Emhof Motorsports owned 15M. All of the CNYMS regulars the K&S Powersports House Car with Rich Wood Jr. at the helm and Accord competitors Oliver, Pomponio, & Reyer would try to steal away the big bucks and a guaranteed starting position for the Short Track Super Nationals to be run in early October.
It was Non stop action everywhere on the well prepared Afton surface. Many of the heavy hitters were starting from deeper in the field which made for some great action for the fans. .With many cars moving quickly from back to front and Fink taking off from his front row the fans got a chance to see just how fast things happen in a sprint car. With only 3 cautions on the evening one for the high flying 5 of Broderick with motor troubles on lap 8 and one for a spinning P13 of Sehn, to avoid another car on lap 14 and the final on lap 20 for the 30 of Goodrich who had a great run wiped out with a mechanical failure.
With the wave of the final green things got right back to some racy action with everyone in the top 15 spots. At the line it was Fink, Wood, Harvey, VanDusen, M. Kiser, Howland, G. Hoffman, Tanner & J. Kiser. Only a half second separated the entire top ten.
Track Promoters Pat & Janet Jordan commented “that was two shows in a row from CNYMS that gave the fans some true racing excitement.” The fans can get their dose of Winged Excitement when the Mini Sprints return for the 1st Annual Short Track Super Nationals on October 6th and 7th. The Speedway is located just off Interstate 88 at exit 7.
